Q: You know how happy I was when I landed this job but the closer my start date becomes, the more nervous I am feeling. I keep doubting myself and wondering if it will be all that I hoped. Any advice?

A: Feeling nervous about your first day on the job is normal. Most people would admit they are excited and anxious in equal measure. Take a deep breath and try to not to pressure yourself wondering how it will go. If you don’t have a few days off in between jobs, at least take the weekend before you start to relax and unwind.

Prepare in advance (what you’ll wear, how you’ll get there, where you’ll park) and make sure you’ve got everything you need (water, notepad, tax file number and superannuation information). Get up early the morning you start so you’re not rushing. Take a deep breath – most first day jitters are gone within a few minutes of arriving. I’ll hazard a guess and say that by the time you’ve made it through the first day, everything went well. And if anything, you’ll be exhausted from information overload.

Above all, remember it takes time to settle into a new job and find your feet; don’t judge the job by the first few days.
